Tips to Prevent and Remove Mold on Bathroom Ceiling

Most homeowners usually give the least importance to cleaning bathroom ceilings. It is often ignored because a typical ceiling is hard to reach for the average American. As a matter of fact, the ceiling can be a breeding ground for dirt, debris, insects, and germs. And it’s a perfect place for mold growth due to excessive moisture in the bathroom.

Like any other part of the house, your bathroom ceiling also needs love and care to look its best. Thus, cleaning and prevention of mold on the bathroom ceiling are necessary so you and your loved ones can breathe easier when you are home.

Why does mold develop on your bathroom ceiling?

Bathroom mold issues and moisture usually occur on the ceiling due to the following reasons:

a.) Humidity issues happen when warm, dampened air reacts with a cool ceiling causing condensation and mold growth.

b.) Liquid moisture issues are due to direct exposure to liquid/water such as roof leaks, plumbing failures, etc.

How To Prevent and Remove Mold on Bathroom Ceiling

The bathroom ceiling is perhaps one of the most susceptible to the growth of fungi such as mold. Due to repeated exposure to water and humidity every day, it is an ideal environment for mold to grow and thrive. Mold on your bathroom ceiling poses serious health risks to you and your family especially if not taken care of immediately.

According to EPA, you can do cleaning alone as long as the affected area is less than 9 square feet area. Bigger than that, it is best to contact trained professionals to help you out. Otherwise, consider the following tips to remove the mold yourself and how to prevent it.

1. Always wear protective gear

The first thing you should do before doing any cleanup is putting on your mask, gloves, and goggles. Mold and cleaners can cause health problems if inhaled so make sure you protect yourself.

2. Identify the cause

Pull back the insulation and check for mold problems. Leaks cause water damage particularly roof leaks so fix them as soon as possible.

3. Prepare your preferred cleaner

You can choose from a variety of mold-killing products in the market or natural homemade mold-busting solutions.

Bleach: Put the mixture ( 25% bleach and 75% water) in a spray bottle. Spray directly onto the surface that contains mold. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes then scrub the molded area lightly with a scrub brush.

Hydrogen Peroxide: To clean thoroughly, spray the affected area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Scrub the area then rinse it with water. Repeat if necessary.

Vinegar: Spray the area and let it sit for at least 15 minutes or up to one hour. Then scrub the area then rinse it with water.

Baking Soda: Add 1 teaspoon to a tablespoon of baking soda to an empty spray bottle. Fill the bottle with ¾  of hot water then shake to dissolve. Spray the area and scrub to clean the mold then, rinse with clean water.

4. Insulate the ceiling

Mold on your bathroom ceiling usually happens due to changes in temperature. The ceiling’s cool parts encourage condensation, so adding layers of insulation is helpful. This makes the surface of the ceiling warmer and will lower the risk of mold growth.

If you know how to insulate your bathroom, you can make it a DIY project. You can insulate the ceiling using fiberglass which is a good option.

5. Install bathroom fans

Oftentimes, mold on bathroom ceilings is caused by humidity. Especially if your bathroom doesn’t have a window, an exhaust fan or a vent fan is necessary. In addition, mounting a bathroom or ventilation fan is very helpful to reduce mold.

6. Invest in a dehumidifier

Excessive moisture can lead to more mold spores spread in the bathroom. Purchasing your own dehumidifier is a big help because it lowers the moisture content in the bathroom. Buying a specific model for the bathroom means that it has concealed wiring to prevent the risk of fire. If you are concerned with saving and conserving electricity, you can set the dehumidifier on a timer.

7. Paint to cover

Mold on bathroom ceilings may leave marks and stains even after removing them. You can use mold-resistant paint to cover the stains but be sure to check that all the mold is gone. Never paint over existing mold because this will just cover the mold and allow mold growth behind the paint.
